Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated
Founded January 15, 1908 on the campus of Howard University in Washington D.C
Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., became the first greek-letter organization to be assembled by African American college-trained women on January 15, 1908 on the campus of Howard University in Washington D.C.
Just one generation removed from slavery, nine women came together with a common vision and purpose. Led by Ethel Hedgeman (Lyle), the nine Howard University students formed Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority. Their relentless committment to high scholastic achievement, leadership, service and civic engagement established a foundation for incorporation, and a legacy of life-long sisterhood that we share today.
On January 29, 1913, 20 college-trained women made it possible for the legacy of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Incorporated to continue. With 986 chapters and over 265,000 members, Alpha Kappa Alpha continues to demontrate the very values fostered by its founders’.
